The new road route almost follows the current route, with some exceptions where the road line shall be straightened out. Several exits shall be relocated/reconstructed, including exits at Berdalsbru and Geiskelid, and some minor access roads shall be established in this connection. The new National Road 9 shall have a road width of 7.5 metres. The project is a part of a larger project that aims to build roads with satisfactory standard and road width in order to get a yellow middle strip on the entire National Road 9 from Kristiansand to Hovden. The aim of the project is to increase traffic safety and accessibility by improving curves, establishing soft side terrain, increasing the road ́s load carrying capacity and improving visibility conditions. The work will consist of i.a. mass haulage, blasting, trench work/plumbing (conduits/cables, sub-drains and some longitudinal drainage), electrical work (road lighting), asphalt work, railing work, road marking and traffic flow. It shall 1 bus bay and 1 edge stop at Berdal bridge, as well as 2 edge stops at Geelid. The project also includes the construction of a new Tverrå bridge and demolition/removal of the existing bridge, as well as a width expansion (concrete cast) of the existing Maurlibekken bridge. It shall not be done with the existing bridge at Berdal, beyond the conveyance of conduits and high voltage cable in the cable bridge on the downstream side of the bridge.
